Show Kolb- D 841 A Very bad road leads through that country, a very hard road comes down into that country. I don't know that they can get to the ranch directly, some years; they could in certain parts one year, and another year it is so badly washed they can't get in. It is not a road, I am told, I haven't seen it, they just follow streambeds to get in. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q That is, they came in one these dry washes? A Yes sir. Q Tell me about the navigation or the trip on the river from Narrow canyon down to the mouth of the San Juan, what trouble you experienced with sandbars or other difficulties. A When we got in that open part, LaRue and Page took one boat, and they alternated at the oars; I took another, one of the heavier boats, and some one else took the third boat, and we each of us took our own channel, and pulled on downstream; had the same incidents we had on our former trip, there were lots of sandbars. Sometimes one would get on, sometimes one wouldn't; it was always a guess as to where the channel was located, and we couldn't tell by the action or the appearance of the water. Q Was there any variation between the two trips that you took through there? A Yes, there was variation; we hadn't made notes of those 2811 |
