Show Blake- D 903 Q In the state of Utah. A I am not certain of the location of Whirlpool and Split Mountain canyon. There are rapids in both those canyons. Q Whirlpool and Split Mountain canyon are both of them in the state of Utah. Just tell about coming through there. A The first rapids were in Whirlpool canyon, if that is the first canyon, and I believe it is. Near the head of the canyon there are numerous other rapids throughout, until Island Park was reached. Q Now, at any place did you have to portage supplies? A Not through that stretch. Q Not through that stretch? A No. Q Now, after you left Split Mountain, did you encounter any other rapids between there and Greenriver, Utah? A Yes. Q Whereabouts? A Between Split Mountain and Greenriver? There were riffles large enough to be called small rapids from the mouth of Split Mountain in certain places to Jensen -- below Jensen. Our first rapids were in Desolation canyon. In Desolation canyon we encountered a great many rather bad rapids, none of the outstanding type of the Hell's Half Mile rapid type, but they were all more or less bad, with protruding rocks and swift waters. 2873 |
