Show Blake- D 888 these instances of taking the boat just passed from my mind completely. I have more detailed memory for my special work than the casual. Then below, we went on to another rapid, eleven miles above the mouth of the San Juan, or approximately eleven miles. Here I think I took the boat after we had portaged around the rapid to below the rapid, I think I took the boat from there to the Colorado river. Q Did you portage at many places on the river? A I think this one place is the only portage where we took the boats. BY THE SPEICAL MASTER: Q Where was that? A Approximately eleven miles above the mouth of the San Juan. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q What was the character of the banks where you made this portage? A Sand, gravel, rock, talus; the river bed was choked with boulders, quite large rocks, and it seemed impossible to run with any assurance of safety. Around to the left, on the left shore, at first was a sandy beach, then a drift- strewn, boulder- strewn body of ground, the extent of which I don't remember, possibly one hundred yards; below that we entered the water either on a gravel or sand beach. 2858 |
