Show Blake- D 902 to view the rapid carefully before running. We ran the rapid, and stopped above a dangerous whirlpool where the current of the river pilled up, making a jumble of rocks, filtered through the rocks, leaving no channel. At this place we took the boats, and by nosing them close in shore, got them into the whirlpool, or the edge of the whirlpool, safe from the menace of the rocks. The current of the river pilled up, making a jumble of rocks. The boatmen then entered the boats, and by strenuous effort passed the whirlpool, on down through Red canyon, through what riffles there were, which, although there was no accident, caused a good deal of skillful manipulation in order to avoid accidents. At the place known as Cold point there were many submerged rocks; the water was fairly swift, and I believe one or two boulders were bumped during the passage through this portion of the canyon. From there we entered little Brown's Park. Q Now, in that stretch of the Colorado river in the state of Utah, did you encounter any other boats -- did you see any other boats? A I don't think we did. Q After you left the canyon of Lodore, where are located the rapids in the state of Utah? A After you leave the canyon of Lodore? Q Yes. A Where are located the first rapids? 2872 |
