Show Blake- D 889 BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Dragged the boat? A Dragged the boat by main strength. Q That is the only place on the river you had to make that portage? A I think it was, yes. Q Did you have to line the boat down through any other rapids? A I think not. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you have any difficulty in the course of time you were on the San Juan at that time with reference to the boats running on sandbars? A Yes sir, through some of the stretches of the San Juan above Clay Hill crossing; we encountered some sandbars at Clay Hill crossing, although I didn't operate the boat there, I witnessed the boat in its transit from the Clay Hill crossing to Piute Farms. Once in a while by glance disclosed the boat was stuck in the sand and was being worked through. I don't know the extent of the difficulties, but there were some. Q In going through those rapids, did you carry your provisions through on the boat, or did you go through light, or how did you go through? A Depends on the roughness of the water and the menace of the rocks in the stream bed. Q On some occasions you took provisions out, did you not? 2859 |
