Show Kolb- D 833 it was in sort of a shoestring shape, that is, a very long, narrow piece of high land in the middle of the river, or above the water, and it wasn't continuous; sometimes there would be a little water connecting parts of it. The rapid is in the shape of the letter " S". I looked it over quite a long time, and at first thought I would try to run it on the south side, but gave it up because there was not sufficient water there. In many cases we would pick out a very narrow channel where we knew the boat would just slip through, the width of the boat would just get through, sneak through, instead of picking the big water out in the center of the river. First, I thought I might get through on that channel, but gave it up, then attempted to run one of the larger boats through on the north side -- northwest side, it would be -- and I was very much afraid of a very sharp bend close to the lower part of the rapid; I had to pull away from the shore; I didn't want to get carried into that bend, because the water ran over a great rock right at the point, and I knew it would upset the boat if I got into it, and in endeavoring to avoid that I pulled too far, and the boat was thrown up on one of these islands where the water was crossing between, and was held on the rocks.
