Show PHYSICAL APPEARANCE Exterior Original The small picture on page 1 of USU Staff News» Special Theatre Edition, Friday, March 31, 1961, show the front of the theatre as it was originally. The arch on the left was the entry to stairs leading to the balcony* This was the only entrance to the balcony,. The rounded wall on the left surrounded a box office, used to sell tickets to the balcony. The figure in the niche in the center of the facade above the marquee was of a trumpeter. The rounded and domed feature on the right is the main box office.. The ornamenta*tion consisted of gold colored plaster bands, mouldings, foliage,, etc. At the right of the theatre there was an alley. Present The 5" x 5 3/4" photograph included with the information on the Lyric shows the.front of the theatre as it is today. A folding steel security gate has been installed in the entrance to the balcony. The space formerly used for. the balcony box office is now used as a portion of a public rest room* Two small advertising boards are on the exterior of the curved wall. New doors to the theatre were built, but the mirrors on them are the original ones. The main box office is essentially the same on the outside as it always was. New glass and talking vents were installed by USU. The marquee shown in the photograph was built in 1961 by USU . The Lyric was once leased by Intermountain Theatres. Sometime during this company's management the original marquee was removed and replaced by a movie theatre marquee. Installation of this feature necessitated the removal of the Ionic capitals on the two outside pilasters. It is our intention to replace the temporary wooden boxes now on the pilasters with capitals to match those on the other two pilasters. The present marquee is modeled on the original one, but is a few feet longer than the old one. The mould ing around the top of the marquee was fashioned by a local tinsmith,. The figure of the trumpeter was removed sometime prior to I960, probably at the same time the old marquee was destroyed. The window and center shield were substituted for the figure„ The original bases of the pilasters were of plaster. Because they were so susceptible to damage and required continuous repair they were replaced with bases made of artificial stone. The exterior of the building has been repainted and the roof has been repaired. The area which was once an alley is now occupied by Jessen |:s shoe store and by a storage and shop area adjoining the theatre 0 |
