TRACTATUS 229 que impium etiam eft ex fuo arbitrio aliquid contra decretum fum- authoritas; nec tamen negamus , quafdam præterea effe fen tentias , quae , quamvis fimpliciter circa verum & falfum verfari videantur. iniquo tamen animo proponuntur , & divulgantur. Verum has etiam Cap. XV.jam determinavimus, atita, ut ratio nihilominus libera manferit, mod fi denique ad hoc etiam attendamus , quod fides uniufcujufque erga Rempublicam , ficuti erga Deum ex folis operibus cognofci poteft , nempe ex charitate erga proximum, mæ potef'tatis, cujus fubditus eft, facere, quandoquidem , fi hoc nequaquam dubitare poterimus , quin optima relpublica unicuique unicuique liceret , imperii ruina inde neceflario fequeretur. Qiinimo nihil contra decretum , & dictamen propriæ rationis agere eandem philofophandi libertatem concedat, quam fidem unicuique concedere oflendimus. Equidem fateor, ex tali libertate incommoda quaedam aliquando oriri-,verum quid unquam tam fïipienter in flitutum fuit , ut nihil inde incommodi oriri potuerit , qui omnia legibus determinare vult,vitia irritabit potius, quam corrige t(ll-læ pro- vult : Nam , utjam oflendimusjufiitia afolo fummarum potefia'tum decreto pendet, adeoque nemo , nifi qui fecundum earum recepta decreta vivit, jufius effe potefl. Sed admeum propofitum reverto : quia ratione unufquifque judicii libertate , falvo fummarum poteftatumjure , uti potefl , ex fundamentis reipublicæ vidimus. At ex iis non minus facile determinare poffumus , quænam opiniones in Republica feditioftc fint-, hiberi nequeunt, neceffario concedenda funt, tamctfi indefæpc damnum fequatur.
