Il ne faut point d'inutilite au Theatte, confequemment on doit bannir de la Scene ce qui peut y jeter du froid, 8c n'y introduire que le nombre exad d'Ao teursnecelTairesa Pexecutiondu Drame. U n Ballet eft une piece de ce genrej il doit etre divife par Scenes 8c par Ades; chaque Scene en particulier > doit avoir, auxfi que i'Ade un commencement, StfR LA D A K S E . 3? un milieu 8c une fin5 e'eft-a-dire, fon ex-poiition, fon nceud 8c fon denouement. J'ai dit que les principaux perfonnages d'un Ballet devoient etre ou-blies pour quelques inftants j j'imagine en effet qu'ileft moins difficile de faire jouer des roles tranfeendants a Hercule 6c Omphale , a Ariane 8c Bachus, a Ajax 8c UlUfe, 8cc. qu'a vingt-quarre perfonnes qui feront de leur fuite. S'ils ne difent rien fur la Scene, ils y font de trop, 8c doivent en etre l^annis; s'ils y parlent, il faut que leur conver-fation foit toujours analogue a celle des premiers Adeurs. L'embarras n'eft done pas de donner un caradere primant 8c diftindif k Ajax&Uliffe, puifqu'ils Pont nam-rellement, 8c quails fonc les Heros de la Scene 5 la difficulte confift( C a |
