Show -61- Mexican Commissioner, my intention of visiting the Colorado again and he arranged for Mr. Zayas, his Assistant Engineer, to join me at the earliest date possible. Owing to the fact, however, that Mr. Zayas was with the party painting Boundary monuments between Yuma and Nogales, and inaccessible by wire or mail, he was not able to join me at Yuma until March 11th. On that date we measured the river at Yuma, working from the ferry cable. On the 12th we measured the Ludy and Imperial Canals and on the 13th the river some six miles below the head of the Imperial Canal and, on the 15th, the river again at a point called "Mike's Landing" which is about two miles above Colonia Lardo, Aurora, and 80 or 90 miles by river below the Imperial Canal head, we having made the trip down the river in a row boat. Mr. Blanco requested us to make a measurement of the river below the canal. The first one was taken in a narrow place where the surface indicated uniform velocities but the work developed cross currents and eddies to such an extent as to render the measurement unreliable. We therefore took another at the lowest point we reached on the river. This was a very good observation. The lowest gauge record for the river during the past winter was 16.8 ft. on the Yuma gauge January 12th and 13th, its average for the month being 17.13. During February it ranged from 17.1 to 18.0, averaging about 17.4. On March 1st it was 17.37, gradually rising to 18.01 on the 6th. It then rose to 18.96 on the 7th; on the 11th it was 18.34, on the 12th 18.26, 13th 18.23 and on the 14th 18.32. This shows that our work was not done on absolutely low water, but that the river was practically stationary during our trip. We set a gauge each night on camping and these showed a stationary river. |
