Show Appendix 373 suffered terribly, till the 13th day of April 1850 when he died, and was buried in the after part of the 14th day of April in the Salt Lake cemetery. He was rational through all of his sickness till the last. * * * * This handwritten copy is owned by E. Pingree Tanner of Magrath, Canada. It was loaned to George S. Tanner in November 1972 who made the type copy. On the margin of the last page is the following: "These items written from memory of Eliza (Elizabeth) Tanner, Sidney Tanner, Maria Louisa Lyman, Myron Tanner, Freeman E. Tanner, Joseph S. Tanner and David D. Tanner, by F. M. Lyman." The entire paper seems to be in the hand of F. M. Lyman. Also written on the last page is another item: "A copy of this en larged upon and corrected is this 21 st Feb. 1902 in the hands of Historian Jensen at the Historians Office." Also added later is this statement: He was buried on Lots 4 and 13 in Block one (1) Plat C, Salt Lake City Cemetery. * * * * This copy was made November 21, 1972 in Salt Lake City by George S. Tanner. The original is not dated but the copyist will make the guess that it predates the item in Scraps of Biography which was published in 1883. There is so much in common between the two articles, that it is to note the differences. Elizabeth Beswick Tanner was born in 1803 and married John Tan ner in 1825. She must have been responsible for much of this story. Sid ney Tanner was born in 1809 and would also know most of the story. These two undoubtedly furnished most of the material to F. M. Lyman who was not born until 1840 and would have been only eight years of interesting age when John Tanner reached the Valley. Louisa Maria Tanner Lyman, mother of F. M. Lyman, was born in 1818. She was near John Tanner and his family through most of the period covered in this article. Myron, Freeman E. Joseph S. and David Dan were all younger but each may have made some contribution to the story. We wish F. M. Lyman had left us the circumstances which occa sioned the of the item. Was it gathered to furnish "Scraps of gathering with its information? F. M. Lyman became an apostle in 1880 and may have been asked to gather the material found in "Scraps of Biography" regarding John Tanner. Biography" |
