Show John Tanner and His Family by George Shepherd Tanner This volume is the story of great pioneer and his large a family. More than a family story, reader will find here through which to see a the window an exciting chapter in American history. John Tanner was born in Rhode Island, in 1778. He became a wealthy farmer at Lake George, New York. He was converted to the Mormon religion in 1832, gave all his property to the new cause he had joined, moved with the Saints from Ohio to Missouri, then to Illinois, and finally the valley of the Great Salt Lake, where he died in 1850. More than three years of scholarly work were required to complete this volume, the author traveling from New York to California, and considerably in Utah. The book is written with a fine balance of historical perspective that gives a clear understanding of the people written about. |
