Show What Price Mormonism! 159 If John or any of his descendants ever regretted the step taken in 1832 which joined their lot with the Latter-day Saints, it is not known. It is not suggested that none of the Tanners ever longed for the flesh pots of Egypt, some may have done, but John Tanner knew well the passage: "No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God. "29 John Tanner knew he paid a high price for his religion. But that historic Christmas day in 1834 as he set his face resolutely to the West in search of the Latter-day Zion, the furrow he plowed was straight and deep, and it would be a very long one. It would on take him to Kirtland, Ohio; to Far West, Missouri; to Liberty, Illinois; to Montrose, Iowa; to Winter Quarters, Nebraska; and finally to arid Utah. But his tread was firm and there was never a backward glance. John Tanner had found the article he wanted and had not bothered about the price tag. Chapter Thirteen - Notes -Nathan's "Reminiscences." The term Zion may be thought of as the gathering place of the Saints at a given time. "Reminiscences" and Elizabeth's "Reminiscences." 12Lyman, Amasa Mason Lyman, p. 38. Nathan:s 13Ibid., p. 36.
