Show 4469 Thomas- D 2489 wet when we stopped for lunch at noon. Q Were those rapids run, or did you portage them? A We ran the rapids. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Did you wear life- preservers? A No, we did not. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Do you recall whether or not you grounded on any of the rapids? A As far as I recall we didn't ground on the rapids; one or two instances we grounded on rock ledges shortly above the rapids. Q Did you have any difficulty with sandbars? A Yes, we were aground several times a day, probably, on the sandbars. Q How did you get off the sandbars? A The boatmen would try to push the boats off with oars; if that wasn't successful, they would get out of the boats, get in the water. Q Do you know Mr. Lewis R. Freeman? A Yes. Q Was he on that expedition? A Yes, he was a boatman. Q Mr. Thomas, I show you a photograph which appears opposite page 175, Exhibit No. 81, Down the Grand Canyon-- THE SPECIAL MASTER: 1923, isn't it? |
