A An old road the Mormon people had in there when they first went as emigrants; at that time it was of no use, couldn't use it as a road, so everybody packed up with animals. But from the other side there was a road -- Q Before we get to that, how large a party did you have in your pack train? A Oh, two or three. Q That is, two or three men? A Yes. Q How many animals? A Possibly half a dozen. Q And what did you carry in the way of equipment? A Well, just provisions, just a small amount of provi sisions, few tools, probably a few picks and shovels. Q And at what point did you enter the Colorado river? A Near Hite, at the mouth of the White canyon. Q After you reached Hite, then where did you go? A Crossed the river and went out by Hanksville to Greenriver. Q How did you cross the river? A In a row boat; a few times we could get our animals over on a bar just above the post office about four or five hundred feet or & thousand feet, we could cross on the bar; maybe twenty feet the animals would swim. |
