Show 4354 Loper- D 2374 A for making a trip down the Colorado river. Q Did you make that trip down the Colorado river? A We got through the biggest portion of the cataracts when we had our mishap. Q What day did you leave Greenriver on that trip? A It was in July; I failed to keep a diary on that, and I can't give you dates. Q What year? A It was 1914, July; I know it was July. Q Can you tell me what the stage of the water was when you left Greenriver? A The river was up pretty well. Q What kind of equipment did you have? A Terrible trip. In the first place, if I would be allowed, I would like to tell the difference in the trip. I had between fifteen and eighteen thousand feet more water in 1914 than I had in 1907; and if I hadn't know where I was, I wouldn't have known the canyon, there was that much difference. There was rapids that was mild affairs in 1907 that was ragers in 1914; other rapids that was bad in 1907 that had entirely disappeared in 1914. And the big drop, what I said was locally known as cataract 16, it was a fury. Q Let's get back to the equipment that you had. BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q You were just talking about Cataract canyon? |
