A They were round- bottom row boats, skiffs, square ends,-- square rear ends, sixteen feet in length -- I didn't measure them, but that is the impression I retained of them. Q From Hall's Crossing where did this party proceed? A Down the river by rather easy stages to Lees Ferry. Q Do you recall the date you left Hall's Crossing? A September 8, 1922. Q How were the boats operated down through there? A They were connected in pairs, in tandem fashion, the reason for that being there were only two Evinrude out- board motors available; one motor was put in the stern of each tandem. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q The boats were lashed? A Yes. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you encounter any rapids on your way down? A Yes, there were rapids in a number of places; the worst rapids were encountered in the first half- day after leaving Hall's Crossing. Q What effect did the rapids have on the operation of the boats? A We shipped water the first half day; we were soaking |
