Show 4369 Loper- D 2389 A The Marguerite. Q Just tell me about coming up the river, the length of time it took, and what difficulties, if any, you had. A Well, as I said, to start out with, I didn't keep a diary; I have got to relate this from what I can remember. Or course, when you say a day, you mean eight hours, or something like that. I should say it took us four days to come up a distance of ninety- five miles to Wimmer's ranch. The amount of load we had on the Marguerite I won't say; may have been two tons or four tons; I won't say about the load, because I wasn't interested in the amount. Q Directing your attention particularly to the condi-tion of the channel, did you get in any difficulties on account of the channel? A We was on sandbars quite frequently. I remember one time I was on the pilot wheel, and I pretty near stood everything on their heads; I run on to a sandbar where the channel crossed, and made a right- angle turn. You never have very much trouble getting off of a sandbar when you are going up the river. Q What was the stage of the water? A That was quite low. Q Did this trouble with sandbars continue all the way up? A Yes. Q Where did you terminate this trip? |
