A The engine, I believe, was what they call the Sterling, rated at about twenty- four horsepower. Q Your rate of travel up stream was, I believe you said, one to two miles an hour? A The most speed we ever made was about two miles an hour against the current. Q And you would keep out of the deep water going up stream? A Keep out as far as we could without getting on the bars. There were times we had to get in deep water in order to get over. Q You would avoid the deep water? A As much of the current as we could. A That was because with the power that you had on that particular boat it was more difficult to make time out in the current? A Some places couldn't make any progress whatever.
