Show 4361 Loper- D 2381 We was on the east side; we had to cross to the west side. By the way, my boat was tied along that rapid. There is a side wash to those big rapids; every time the wash would come up, it would throw a little water in my boat; incidentally, it would carry a little sand along with it; so my boat became full of sand, and sunk, and I tried to get Russell to help me get it out. He wouldn't turn his hand. You know, when we started back up the river we stopped at the big drift and carried lumber down out of the drift and made a raft. He was to use an oar on one end of the raft, and me an oar on the other end, and we could go across nicely. When I pushed that off into the river he turned as white as a piece of paper. He had his camera with him, and this sack of biscuits. He sat there. I had to do the best I could. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q How did you go up the river? A Walked. Q Walk along the bank? A Yes; the reason we had to cross -- one reason was because we became lodged on this side and had to walk out. You can walk on one side or the other of the river clear through Cataract canyon with one exception, that is just below the mouth |
