Show Butt- D 556 as to how many times you forded it, that you crossed once going over and once coming back? A Well, then, I think we made a mistake. I think we forded it once and came back and re- set the instrument to get just the data that was our route, to go up Clay Hill range and back. Q I am not interested in your route. How many times did you ford it on that expedition? A I don't know, to be right sure about it. Too far back for me to remember. Q You think you have forded it on other occasions? A Hundreds of them, yes sir. Q Hundreds of them? A Yes sir. Q Were the conditions as you found them on this occasion when you were with the government party similar to those you had found on the other occasions when you forded it? when we forded it with the government party the water was clear and not very high; other occasions I have forded it when the water was raising, and the quicksand made it kind of dangerous, but the horses was used to it, so I didn't mistrust them. Q The water was lower when you forded it on this government expedition than on other occasions when you would ford it? A Not altogether, no; it was low at that time-- lower than it is in the spring of the year, because it raises in the mountains when the snow melts in the spring of the year. 2522 |
