A Yes, we were on the south side; sometimes we run them on the north side, towards the foot of Elk mountain, on the north side of the San Juan. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q. Have you ever had any trouble with the quicksand, sand bars on the San Juan river? A I have had nothing else. Q At what point a have you had trouble with the sand bars and the quicksand? A The current would change, the river would move, floods would come and move those sand bars where we used to cross, sometimes be two or three hundred yards below; the weight of the water moved them; when they got where the water didn't riffle much, there they would sattle again. Q Was that near BluffCity? A All up and down the river? A Where it didn't have much fall, where it run slow; some placed had quite a fall, and moved the whole foundation; other places it run slow and formed little sand bars. Q Did you ever see any boats operating on the San Juan river? A Nothing only at these trading posts, where they traded with the Indians, go and ferry them over with the wool and pelts; the stores was on that side, on the north side; they had little 2518 |
