Show Bell- D 513 Q Is Aztec, New Mexico, on the San Juan? A No sir, it is on the Animus river. Q Do you recall a flood in that country in 1884? A Yes sir. Q Just tell me about that, please, and what you recollect of it. MR. FARNSWORTH: 1884? MR. BLACKMAR: Yes. A What do you want, just in relation to my business? Q No, just describe the general conditions, where your were and what you saw. A Well, I had built a bridge across the Aztec in 1883, and the flood of 1884 came in the spring, and they sent for me to come down there, so I went down and tried to save the bridge, but the water rose too high, two or three fest above there they all thought the high water mark was, and part of the bridge went out. Q How far is that bridge from the San Juan river? A Why, I don't really know the course of the river, but the San Juan empties -- the Animus empties into the San Juan right there just below Farmington; it is, I should judge, sixteen to eighteen miles. Q Are you familiar with the Animus river? A Somewhat, yes. Q Is that a river that flows all the year round? A Yes sir. Q Have you ever crossed the San Juan river in the neighborhood of Fruitland? A Yes sir, forded it. 2479 |
