A My first experience was grubbing land, cutting cottonwood trees off and planting corn and melons and so on on the San Juan river. Q At what point? A Near what we call Bluff City. Q Has there been any change between the conditions in and around Bluff City as you saw them then and as they are today? MR. FARNSWORTH: With respect to what? A The farm land we had there then has mostly all washed away. What was the question? BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q The change in conditions, if any. A Yes sir. Q Along the San Juan river at Bluff. A Lots of it, yes sir. Q All right; go ahead. A The land we farmed, we was doing fairly well, there come a high water in 1884, I think it was, and took our farms and washed them down the river, bed of the San Juan river; cut them all to pieces; washed the land away. We had spent hundreds of dollars to get cottonwoods off for cultivation. Q Did you ever assist in trying to protect that land there at Bluff, Utah, from the ravages of the river? A Yes sir, I have.
