Show Nielsen- D 447 It is sand or rock? A Where we crossed it, we crossed on a ford, gravel ford. Q What depth would you find the water there in the summer months? A About two or three feet, sometimes; sometimes lower, sometimes higher. Q What is the lowest you have ever seen it at that point? A About a foot deep? Q About a foot deep? A Yes sir. Q Did that happen often in the summer months? A Well, it just happened if there was rains up in Colorado in the heads of these streams it would raise; and when the rains was over it would go down again, just like any of those streams, it would be up and down. Q So the river is very variable as to depth? A Yes sir. Q When you first went there to Bluff, Utah, in 1880, has the con-dition in and about Bluff changed since that time? A Yes sir. Q In what respect? A Well, there was big flats and bottoms all along the river, and it has changed; those bottoms are all washed away. The river is over to one side one day and over somewhere else the next day; it is quicksandy formation; when the water hits the quicksand it melts it; when the water is real high, it tears right in and washes out a whole bottom; practically all the land that there when we first went there has been changed 2413 |
