Show Jones- RC 418 A Well, I didn't know of it if they did. They would cross and do their trading and go right back home; they may have towed a boat upstream for a short distance so as to get the benefit of the current, something like that; I never knew of them using the river to go up and down. Q Was there any trapping on the San Juan? A Yes sir. Q Tell us the names of some of the old trappers? A One was Peter Shurts. He was the first man I knew of. Q What nationality was he? A I couldn't tell you. Q How do you spell the last name? A S- h- u- r- t- s, I think. Q Where did he have his cabin? A Didn't have any cabin; had a tent. Q Where did he have his tent, if he had it at any particular place? A At the mouth of what we call the Montezuma wash. Q Where is that from Bluff? A It is up fifteen or eighteen miles east of Bluff. Q Did he come down and to Bluff and trade with you? A No, there was no Bluff there then. Q Did he come down after there was a Bluff? A No, I don't think so; he moved on up. Q What other trappers were there besides him? A I don't recall the names of any of them. Q Were there quite a number of trappers down the river? A Some trappers there. 2392 |
