Show Butt- D 546 A It is about half- way between Bluff and Mexican Hat; the mouth of Comb wash is about half- way between. Q When you crossed there, what kind of conditions did you find? On the south side of the river, or where? Q I am talking about the river. A The river boxes right after that. I wasn't on the river only where it wasn't boxed up; it goes through a range of low hills. I crossed the clay hill below the range and crossed it coming back at the mouth of Comb wash this side of that range of hills, what we call CEdar ridge. Q Have you been down on the river on other occasions between Bluff City and the Colorado river? A Yes, I went through there several times. Q Have you been down there after cattle? A No, not after cattle. I went to help emigrants coming in the country; they got stalled in the middle of the desert; we got word, and we would go help them in; teams would play out, and so forth, and we would go help them move. Q Whereabouts would they get stalled? A This side of the Hole- in- the- Rock. Q That is over on the other side of the Colorado river? A Yes, on the other side of the Colorado, call it the Hole- in- the Rock, where they enter from Escalante desert. We made a road there, shot it out with powder. We call it the Hole- in- the- Rock; some got stalled there. We went from Bluff City over to get the people and the teams and wagons in to Bluff city. Q What is this place you call the Hole- in- the- Rock? 2512 |
