Show Butt- 564 FURTHER EXAMINATION BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q It must have been a grazing country, then? A That is the only thing it is fit for, is grazing country. Q I thought you said it was fit for nothing? A Not for agriculture, it wasn't fit for. it is good grazing land; sheep and cattle does very well. REDIRECT EXAMINATION BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Good grazing land all along the Colorado west of Monticello, and all through in there? A Where the rivers come together there is nothing but bed rock, only a few cobblestone mesas; when you get south of Elk mountain and all that mountain east of it, there is quite a lot of grazing land. Q Where is Elk mountain? A Right north of Bluff city. If I took you up on that range of mountains you could see it, what we call the Bear's Ears, two little rocks setting up on the south end of the Elk mountain; that is some grazing country. Q In this country west of Bluff, where you ran cattle, did you find your pasturage up on the mesas or down in the draws? A In the draws, and on the sloping hills south of the Cedar ridge the grass grew some years, some years it didn't: we put them over there because there was more grass there than 2530 |
