Show Butt- D 554 it would be still in their stomachs. Sometimes get out on the bank and lay down; sometimes had to pull them out of the quicksand; just get filled up with water; sometimes they would sink in up to their stomachs; many a time my boys pulled hundreds of head out after I quit riding they spent all winter down there pulling hundred of head of cattle, by the horn of the saddle. Q Do you have pretty heavy rainstorms in that country, in the summer time? A Just once in a while, nothing regular. A What effect do those rain storms have on the river? A They raise the river sometimes to the extent that it washes away part of the bank; if long enough to soak up the bank, it will cave them into the river bottom. Q. Have you ever seen the river frozen over in the winter time? A Yes, I have. Q During what years, can you recall? A It is about Christmas time I worked on the road at the mouth of a wash where we hauled wood on the ice across the river; that is a long time ago; awful cold weather; four below zero for six weeks. Q What year was that? A To the old Bill Hyde trading post on the San Juan river. Q What year was that? A I forget; about 1904, I guess. Q Have you ever been in a sand storm on the San Juan river? A More than I ever want to be in again; yes sir, I have. 2520 |
