Show Section 106 - Cultural Resource inventory. 300 West/Cottonwood St. between 5300 South and 7200 South Prehistoric Baseline recorded no prehistoric artifacts or sites. Limited ground ex-posure hampered the efforts to locate prehistoric remains. Historic Baseline identified a total of seventy-eight (78) structures along the proposed upgrade corridor. Of the seventy-eight (78) existing structures, sixteen (16) are in-period and sixty-two (62) are out-of-period. Baseline recommends that ten of the in-period buildings be considered eligible for the Ntional Register of Historic Places. The in-period buildings are listed in Table 1 and described below; descriptions are based on Carter and Goss (1991). Utah Ore Sampling Mill The first four buildings are part of the Utah Ore Sampling Mill complex; their relationships to each other are shown on Figure AJ. 5510 South 300 West (Building #4). This building (Figure 4) was built at approximately the same time as the mill building (building #2). Its original use was as a shower/changing room for the mill workers. The exterior of the building remains relatively unchanged, with its twostory, concrete block construction. This building is eligible for the NRHP due to its age and lack of major modifications. 5510 South 300 West (Building #3). Like the shower/changing building (Building #4) this building (Figure 5) was also built at the same time as the main mill building. It was built as the machine shop where most of the equipment repairs were completed. It is framed \vith used railroad ties and sided with corrugated sheet metal. This building is eligible for the NRHP because of its age and lack of any significant changes 5510 South 300 West (Building #2). Figures 6 and 7 are photos of the main mill building of the Utah Ore Sampling Mill. It was built in the late 1920's. No modifications have been made to it. It is very similar to other mill buildings constructed during this time frame (e.g .. the USSR&M concentrator mill in Midvale). The building is eligible for the NRHP because of its age and lack of modifications. 5510 South 300 West (Building #1). Building I (Figure 8) is the superintendent's residence, built in 1908. It is currently used as a residence by the current owner of the mill property. It is a good example of a cross wing type house. This house is eligible for the NRHP because of its age and lack of any modifications. |
