Meyer, a mining engineer from St. Louis. By 1880, there were t en sampling mills in the Utah Territory, these included two in Salt Lake City and four in ·Sandy and vicinity".8 At that time, raw ore was sampled by fifths or tenths of a "sack"; the charge was $1.00 per ton. Raw ore is sampled in order to determine its content, or quality and quantity. The information is then used as a basis for economic decisions, such as whether or not to invest in a mine. It is for this reason that the process of sampling ore is so important and continually being improved. In the 1880s, the process was simple; the raw ore was crushed to the size of peas, placed sealed packages, and sent to the assayer who determined the value. 9 Gra~ually, the process of sampling ore was aut9~ated and required huge machinery. ~-t~~~~~~~/~~~~'~~~~~~~~~~~~~~;~~~\\~\~ ~ the Utah Sampling Mill (S)i the were located "four doors west of Third West". The business office for proprietors J.C. Conkling and F.O. Horn was located at 115 South Main Street Room 2. J. Conkling is listed in pre-1885 and post-188s city directories as an assayer; neither he nor his partner F.O. Horn appear to be associated with the Taylor & Brunton Ore Sampling Mill. Copeland assumed the duties of managing the sampling mill.12 Copland was born on October 5, 1863, in Otterville, Ontario, Canada. 13 Although the city directories do not list Copeland as manager until 1901, his obituary states that "he came west about 1892 to manage the Taylor & Brunton Ore Sampling Mill". In 1899, he married Louise Cahoon with whom he had two daughters. Copeland managed the mill until 1906, when he left to start his own sampling company in Sandy, Utah. This must not have been a profitable venture, as he closed the Sandy operation and went to work for Interstate Brick Company as a draftsman, designer and engineer. Copeland passed away on April 20, 1947, at the age of eighty-three; his wife preceded him four months earlier.
