NPS Form United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. ~ Page § Utah Ore Sampling Company Mill, Murray, Salt Lake County, UT was then sold in December to Emest R. Woolley (1882-1952), a Salt Lake banker and businessman. Woolley immediately deeded the property to the Utah Ore Sampling Company. The Utah Ore Sampling Company had previous sampling facilities in Park City, Silver City and Tintic, but eventually consolidated its operations at the Murray location. Emest R. Woolley served as the president of the company and his brother Frederick R. Woolley (1976-1956) was secretary. In 1911 Jesse W. Knight became president. Knight, the son of Utah mining magnate Jesse Knight (1845-1921), held this position for over forty years. Another longterm executive was W. Lester Mangum (1873-1949) who served as secretary of the company from 1914 to his death in 1949. The earliest general managers were A. W. Gates who served from 1909 to 1914 and Frank M. Manson (?-1951) manager from 1914 to 1921. Emilie George Jensen (1882-1962) began working at the mill as the assistant manager in 1916. He became general manager in 1921, and later vice president in 1946. He held that position until the mill closed in 1958. The city directories indicate the company kept office in various locations in Salt Lake City until 1933 when all office functions were presumably moved to the mill site. The Knight family ended their association with the mill in 1934. The year 1909 also marks the construction of a frame cross-wing residence built for the mill's on-site 8 superintendent. Prior to that time a night watchman slept in small bedrooms at the south end of the brick office. The first occupant of the superintendent's house was probably Frank Burgner (1881-1950), a foreman for Taylor & Brunton and later the Utah Ore Sampling Company. The 1909 directory lists him at a "residence south of the Pallace [sic] Sampling Mill," which fits the description of the superintendent's house. Frank Burgner's obituary notes he was superintendent of the Utah Ore Sampling Company's plant at Silver City between 1908 and 1916, and resided in Murray between 1916 and 1924. Frank is listed as the superintendent of the ore mill and living at 5516 S. 2 nd West in Murray with wife Belva Cahoon (1905-1971) and their four children on the 1920 census . The family moved to Califomia in 1928. The occupant between the Burgners may have been the family of Daniel M. Monk (1883-1940), foreman of the mill in 1910, and his wife Fannie Whale Monk (1887-?) . The superintendent after Frank Burgner was Louis A. Walters (18821977). Lou Walters became the assistant superintendent of the sampling mill around 1924. He was the superintendent of the mill for about thirty years. He and his wife, Goldie Bamey Walters (1885-1969), lived in the house between 1925 and 1951 . Lou retired from the mill in 1955. Between 1952 and 1960, Joseph T. Johnson (1895-1970) lived in the house with his family. He served as the assistant superintendent between 1952 and 1956 when he became the supervisor. tie was the last superintendent of the sampling mill. The federal census enumerations for Murray between 1900 and 1930 indicate that most of the sampling mill workers lived within a few miles of the site. The 1910 census, for example, lists the foreman, a machinist, and eight "sampling mill laborers" living within few blocks of the mill on Murray's west side. These workers represent a diverse group. Five were married with families. Three of the younger (17-19 years-old) single men were Utah-bom and living with their parents. Four were immigrants, one from Wales, one from Ireland, and two from Swede. With one exception all were naturalized citizens. Joseph Martini, the mill's machinist, was the son of German immigrants who moved to Utah with his wife and five children from Minnesota. The later census enumerations show a similar diversity, however the workers were living farther from the plant. By 1930 fewer were living within the Murray city limits.
