R . Wooley the Secretary and A. W. Gates the general manager. <It was ,in this yea~t the name of the mill changed to the Utah Ore Sampling Mill: By 1911, the two Wooleys had moved on and Jesse Knight became President. Knight held this position for over forty years. A.W. Gates remained General Manager until 1914, when F.M . Manson accepted the position. Frank M. Manson was act i ve in the early deve l opment of the mining industry in Utah, Nevada and Ca l ifornia. 14 Manson served as General Manager of the Utah Ore Sampling \ u · \..y ' Mill from 1914 to 1921 ; he was later employed for aft time as General Manager of the Western Ore Purchasing Company . Manson retired from the mining industry in 1939; he continued to supervise his extensive cattle holdings in Mexico until his death in March, 1951. 15 The same year Manson began employment with the mill. (1914), W. Lester Mangum became Secretary. Mangum was known as a prominent Utah mining and business organizer, ~ "" and educator. " church man£,' He was born to James and Amy Mangum in Nephi, Utah on November 27, 1873. His parents were among the first pioneers to s ettle the St . George, Utah area. Lester began attending Br ~' ham Y5l~~B&Y~\~~~~_ in 1 8 98; in 1900, he left Provo to serve a mi ssion for th DS or Mormon Church) On completion of the two-year mission , Mangum returned to col ~g£ , gra ~ting in 19 05. Later that year he married Jennie Knight, daughter of~~~~ ght ( 'p~es ident, Utah Ore Sampling Mill 1911-1951+). Mangum was responsible for helping to organize and direct various mining, smelting and refining companies. He helped to organize the Lt, . L t.. · ,.v ....a.., American-Columbian Corporation for which he was Vice-president and Mal~er; the company's holdings included one mil l ion acres of land in South America. Mangum was Secretary of the Utah Ore Sampling Mi l l from 1914 until the time of his death in 1949. He passed away at the age of seventy-five . \ . C/ . However, the one man with the l ongest and closest association with the sampling mill is Emil I e George Jensen. Jensen was born in 1 8 82 in Brigham City, Utah. In 1915, he married Myrt l e McEwan in Salt Lake City; the couple has two sons Don and reed. Jensen began his lifetime career at the mill in 191 6 as the ' tss istant M~~ager. Rv 1921, he had been promoted to Manager; two years later he became the , 1"' I'V\. t· ,. e. \. c. . ,.~ . General Manager . In 1946 EmilIe was appointed Vice President and General Manger; t ot '-c· I-C_ by 1950 his title was that of Executive Vice President. Jensen was a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; he retired ~tm the mill in 1958. Jensen passed away in December of 1962. 16 INDUSTRY At the Utah Ore Sampling Mill, the raw ore arrived by rail i n hopper cars.
