Show ---continued--The superintendent after Frank Burgner was Louis A. Walters. Louis (sometimes listed as Lou or Lewis) Walters became the assistant superintendent of the sampling mill around 1924. He was the superintendent of the mill for about thirty years. He and his family lived in the house between 1925 and 1951. Louis Alvin Walters was born on September 9, 1882 in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He married Goldie Barney on June 21, 1906. Goldie Glenn Barney was born in Eureka, Utah on March 14, 1885. The couple had one daughter, Kathryn. The family is listed on the 1930 census with the monthly rent for the superintendent's house $35 at the time. In addition to being superintendent of the sampling mill for thirty years, Lou Walters also held many local F.O.E. offices and was state president of the F.O.E. In 1952 the Walters family moved to a home on Wasatch Street in Murray. Louis Walters retired around 1955. Goldie Walters died on October 31, 1969. Louis Walters died on February l3,1977. Between 1952 and 1960, Joseph T. Johnson lived in the house. Johnson served as the assistant superintendent under Louis Walters between 1952 and 1956 when he became the supervisor. Joseph Theodore Johnson was born in Murray on November 9, 1895. He married Merelda Elizabeth Berger on July 14, 1920. Merelda Berger was also born in Murray on July 20, 1895. The couple had seven children. According to the obituary of Merelda Johnson, she died of carcinoma in the house on October 8, 1952. Joseph Johnson later married a widow, lona (or lone) Christensen, on September 10, 1954. She was born lona Annetta Shelton in Joseph, Utah on July 8, 1899. Joseph and lona stayed in the house about two years after the sampling mill shut down in 1958. (The ASARCO smelter had been closed since 1950.) Joseph Johnson died in Salt Lake on August 22, 1970. Iona Johnson died in Richfield, Utah on February 12, 1989. The mill property was sold to the J.1. Coan Company in 1958. It was later sold to the Spratling Investment Company in 1964. The house continued to be used as a rental for little more than a decade after the sampling mill closed. Joe W. Bordelon, a caxpenter, and his wife Lois, lived there in the early 1960s. At the time the mill building was leased by Utah Technical Industries Shop. The mill was vacant between 1967 and 1974, although the superintendent's house was occupied by Keith and Alene Densley in the early 1970s. Keith Densely worked for Barnes Heating & Electric. During the time the All Minerals Company used the mill complex between 1975 and 1987, the house was not used as a residence. Since that time the house was used primarily for office and storage space until 1990 when the current owner, Bob Conrad, took up residency. Bob Conrad operates Bob's Automotive Service Center from the mill site and specializes in used car parts for older model vehicles. Common Label Information: l.
