Page L ,/ . ~ Utah Ore Sampling Mill, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah Industries in Murray were hit hard by the 1930s depression. The smelters began to close in 1931, and major industry had all but disappeared by 1940. Murray City took advantage of the new federal projects, and the Works Project Administration (WPA) was responsible for many public improvements between 1930 and 1940. The city was well organized, and with clear goals officials actively sought federal money to refurbish public buildings as well as its twenty-two-acre park. Unfortunately, in the years between 1930 and 1950 the smelters, brickyards, and mills that fueled the industrial economy had either closed down or moved . ORY As early as 1858, mineral d~poslts had been found near Murray, but it was not until 1864 that the large deposits were found in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The first furnace for smelting ore was built in Murray in 169-70 by the Woodhull Brothers. 5 As mining activity increased, so did the need for smelting and refining plants; by 1872 sixteen furnaces were in operation. 6 th~ In Salt Lake City Polk Directory a business by the name of the Utah Sampling Mill is listed; the offices were located on South Temple, "four doors west of Third West H , and the proprietor was J.C. Conkling7. The residential listing for Conkling indicates he lived at 50 East Third South; additionally a business name of J.C. Conklin & Co. appears with the residential listing. The J.C. Conklin & Co. is also found in the business section, with F. O. Horn as Conklin's business partner. The listing for J.C. Conklin & Co. states J.C. Conklin and F.O. Horn as proprietors of the Utah Sampling Mills; the offices were located in Room 2, 115 South Main. The 1890, Polk City Directory has two listings for Ore Samplers; the directory also advises that the heading of Assayers should be consulted. The Conklin Sampling Works was located at 126-128 South Main Street in rooms one and two; the second company was Scott & Anderson located at 218 South Main Street. In 1893, the city directory provided a business heading for local Ore Sampling Works. Listed first is the Conklin Sampling Works, now located at 36 West 200 South. Listed in bold face type is The Taylor & Brunton Ore Sampling Co., their offices were located in room 511 of the Dooly Building. Other Ore Sampling Works in 1893 included the Sandy Sampling Mills with offices located at 218 South Main; the other two are the Pioneer Sampling Mills and Richard Mackintosh; both located at 41-42 Scott-Auerbach Building. The alphabetical listing for the Taylor & Brunton Ore Sampling Co. indicated James W. Neill as the manager; the office was located at 511 Dooly Building, with the works located in Pallas, Utah. The telephone number for the office was #599 . The personal listing for James W. Neill also appears in bold face type; in addition to being the manager of the Taylor & Brunton Ore Sampling Co., Neill was a Mining Engineer and boarded at the Cullen House. 5 Tales of a Triumphant People: A History of Salt Lake County, Utah.
