Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The superintendent's house is located at the southeast comer ofthe Utah Ore Sampling Company Mill site located at 5510 South 300 West in Murray, Utah. The historic address of the residence was 5516 South 2nd West. In order to distinguish the residence from the mill this form uses 5516 South 300 West as the building'S address, though the house and mill are officially listed as 5510 South 300 West. 1 According to the tax card, the one-story frame cross wing was built in 1909. This date is probably correct for three reasons, 1) construction style and materials, 2) the date corresponds to an expansion of the mill's capacity and need for on site supervision, and 3) a description in the city directory. However, the house does not appear on the 1911 Sanborn map of the mill; probably because the mill was drawn as an isolated or "special" industrial site and the house was farther south than the 1911 mill complex. The house is frame on an early concrete foundation. The fa~ade faces east. The house is covered in drop-novelty siding, currently painted white. The front and back porches have been enclosed with screens, probably close to the time of the original construction. The simple gable roof is covered in asphalt shingles (circa 1960s) and there are three brick chimneys. Two are original and one a circa 1960s rebuild. The house has its original one-overone double-hung wood windows. The south wing extends to the west beyond the back porch an additional thirteen feet, a feature that appears to be part of the original construction. On the interior, the house has 1, 160 square feet of space. There is a parlor-bedroom in the northeast comer (now used as a workshop and office). One the south side is a large combined living room-dining room area (office and storage space). The kitchen and bathroom are in the northwest comer. At the southwest comer is a bedroom. The interior has many original features (e.g. paneled doors, molding, kitchen cabinets, 9-ft ceilings), however most of the interior was remodeled with light colored paneling, probably in the 1970s. The house is in fair structural condition, however it has not been painted for many years. A square shaped frame and novelty sided building over a cellar is located just behind the house. It is designated as a "washhouse" on the tax cards and was probably contemporary with the original construction. A circa 1910 one-car frame garage associated with the house was demolished, probably in the 1970s. The superintendent's house is one of four extant buildings on the Utah Ore Sampling Mill site; a 4.03-acre triangular shape parcel located between several parallel lines of the Union Pacific and the Denver & Rio Grande railroads. The mill buildings date from between about 1913 and 1927. The surviving buildings include Mill C and Mill D, a multi-story conglomerate of wood, corrugated metal, and concrete; a corrugated metal shop building; a concrete-block change house, and the superintendent's residence. A fifth building, a concrete and brick thaw shed, is located to the south on a separate property. Despite the industrial location, 300 West has a number of historic frame residences to the south of the mill. There are also several newer concrete-block warehouses in the area. The mill and its associated buildings, including the superintendent's house, are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and contribute to the historic resources of the neighborhood. The superintendent's house is currently in the path of a proposed expansion of 300 West (Cottonwood Street). The house will be moved or demolished in the summer of2003. I In 1972 several Murray street names were changed to correspond to a change in the Salt Lake grid numbering system, e.g. 2nd West became 300 West. |
