C'est alors que le regent etablit les bals masques de POpera, par une ordon-nance du 3i decembre 1715. Ces bals avaient lieu trois fois par semaine pendant le carnaval. La mecanique invented alors par un moine dont le nom est reste inconnu, et dont on se sert encore pour elever le parterre et Porches-tre au niveau du theatre, donna les moyens de preparer la salle pour le bal, apres une representation dramatique executee le soir m e m e . La salle de POpera fut ornee de lustres, d'un cabinet tout en glaces dans le fond, d'un or-chestre a chaque bout, et d'un buffet pour les rafraichissemens au milieu. Ces bals eurent un succes prodigieux. On y dansait alors avec fureur pendant toute ^M \w ET LES BALLETS. OQ3 lanuit; on s'y promene aujourd'luii. Au lieu de trois bals par semaine, POpera n'en d o n n e Plus q»e quatre a la fin du carnaval. La ville de Paris donna cependant une superbe fete de ce genre, le 3 aoul 1739,3Poccasion du manage de Madame filisabeth de France avec Don Philippe, infant d'Espagne.Lesapprets en avaient ete si magnifiques , si somptueux , que 1'on crut devoir admettre le public au plaisir de les admirer. Le cardinal de Fleury lui-meme se rendita l'HAtel-de- Ville , par curiosite, et il y trouva tous *es ministres, que le m e m e motif y avait amenes.
