Les costumes offraient un melange bizarre des habits de Pepoque et d'une imitation grossiere et ridicule de ceux de Pantiquite. Armide , ses confiden-tes, ses nymphes, paraissaient en robea queue de soie a ramage, la taille longue et busquee, des manches serrees jus-qu'au coude, etde grandes engageantes de dentelle flottaient autour de leurs avant-bras. U n e especedecimier, fait en pain de sucre, s'elevait au-dessus de leur 1 ET LES BALLETS, i g„ tete; un voile qui pendait jusqu'a terre s'attachait a la pointe du cimier. Les heros portaient un casque charge de plumes , avec la grande perruquc On inventa pour le ballet des costumes de fantaisie, tailles sans gout, massifs et lourds malgre leur forme ecourtee, et sur lesquels on se regla dans la suite, attendu que ce modele de convention avait ete adopte. C o m m e ces costumes se ressemblaient beaucoup entre eux on eut recours aux emblemes pour ca-racteriser les divers personnages et les faire connaitre au public au moment de leur entree en scene. Les Vents portaient un masque bouffi, tenant un soufflet d'une main , un eventail de l'aulre. La Debauehe, coiffee d'une cou-ronne dont les fleurons elaientdes ver-res a pied, remplis de vin rouge, blanc, jaune , orange ; portant des epaulettes' une ceinture, des jarretieres dans le |
