La cour de Louis XIII etait fort triste, et les ballets que le due de Nemours inventa pour Pegayer, de tres mauvais gout, temoin le ballet de maitre Calico > matias, pour le grand bal de la douai-riere de Billebahault et de son Jan/an de Sotteville, ou Louis XIII figura. Ce due podagre aimait passionnement la danse : en i63o, il composa le ballet des Goutteux, et se fit porter dans un ET LES BALLETS. j23 fauteuil pour tenir son rang parmi les danseurs. O n applaudit, on admira le due de Nemours qui imaginait de pa-reilles sottises. L e cardinal de Savoie etait alors en France, et la reine Pin-vita d'une maniere pressante a regaler le roi d'un ballet de sa facon. Les courtisans s'en moquerent, non pas a cause du caractere du maitre des ballets, mais parce qu'ils pensaient qu'un plat montagnard etait incapable de divertir une cour aussi polie que la cour de Louis XIII, ou Pon possedait tout ce que le gout le plus delicat pou-vait inventer en diverlissemens de ce genre. Le cardinal est instruit de ces pro-pos, accepte Pinvitation de la reine, se pique au jeu, et donne, a Monceaux, un grand ballet intitule : kx Monta-gnards, ou la satire la plus maligne se mela aux productions du comte d'Aglie, • |
