Show paper was no longer intact, the north and west walls were covered with newer bituminous roll stock secured with battens. This material is h9aim:·~ and of a different color and texture than the original paper. The b their spacing is also not as was done originally. The east wall has ~Jm;ea wood siding with a few small pieces of original paper and battens remaining. RECOMMENDATIONS: Remove the existing tar paper and battens, saving original battens for reuse if in good condition. Install new, black tar paper of the same thickness and width as existed originally (see remnants) and secure the same with vertical wood battens at 24 inches on center. The battens should match the originals in dimension. Also reinstall the original corner boards, or matching, flat boards. As mentioned under FOUNDATION, install rim joists at the bottom of the walls to cover the otherwise exposed ends of floor joists. 4. WINDOWS EXISTING CONDITION: The east windows are intact except for some panes of broken glass. The small, square, south windows are not original but were added when the building was cut in half. Some of theses have been filled in with wood boards. They are old and worth keeping, however. The west windows have been covered over with newer tar paper. The sashes have been removed and sit on the floor of the south room along the west wall. Some panes of glass are broken. There are no north windows. RECOMMENDATIONS: Uncover and remove the infill from all covered windows. Install the sashes in windows from which they have been removed. Replace broken or missing glass with matching glass. Repair all windows to make them operable (sliding or swinging) as they were originally, including all hardware. Secure the original wire screens with battens as was done originally. 5. DOORS EXISTING CONDITION: The two west doors may be original, although their placement seems unusual. Still, they are similar to those pictured in photos of other Topaz buileings. The north door is older than the building and was salvaged from an outbuilding. The South door dates from the right historic period but must have been added when the building was cut in half. It may have been salvaged from the building, as may have some of the interior doors, none of which existed in their present locations originally. RECOMMENDATIONS: Retain and repair all but the north door. Use one of the period interior doors to replace the north door. Make all doors operable and in sound condition.
