Show Topaz buildings originally sat on raised concrete foundations about 16-18" above the ground. RECOMMENDATIONS: To achieve the most visually accurate and structurally sound result, the building should be placed on a reinforced concrete footing and foundation system. The top of the foundation wall should be at least 16" above the ground. To build the foundation, the building would best be moved to the south temporarily while the footing and foundation system are being built. On top of the foundation wall should be 2x6" redwood or treated wood plates, bolted to the wall. The newer longitudinal beams should be removed and the original 2x6" floor joists should be set on the new plates and secured with rim joists and metal connectors. It is beyond the scope of our present work to engineer this system, so we describe it here only generally. A far less expensive treatment would be to leave the buil w sits on an inadequate "foundation." If this is done, the build in ttle or be subject to movement due to strong winds or seismic ti·. If left in its present condition, the building's owners must be willing to assume liability to injury that might occur due to the persistence of an unsafe condition. 2. ROOFING EXISTING CONDITION: Corrugated metal sheet roofing has been installed over the original tar paper roofing which may have been in bad condition after only a few years. RECOMMENDATIONS: To return the rootto its original appearance, remove the metal roofing and any non-original underlayment. Remove damaged original roofing and install new tar paper roofing to match the original material and method of installation. Photos show that the roofing was rolled material with its lengths running parallel to the roof ridge. The paper was overlapped so as to hide nailing and resist wind damage. It is not known if the roofing was also secured by tar or other glue-like products. We recommend using an appropriate adhesive, especially at roll edges, t~ ~J -I extend the life of the roofing. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~b.3.
