This species forms the type of the genus Schilbeichthys, Bleeker, which differs from the Pseudeutropius chiefly in having no second or adipose dorsal fin. I have taken a large number of the young of this species from 4 to 9 inches in length, and find that the adipose dorsal, though small, is distinct in the fry; but as the size of the specimens increases up to 6 or 7 inches it has either almost or entirely disappeared, and is invariably absent in the adult. I therefore consider the species to be a Pseudeutropius; for the difference which exists in the nostrils between it and some others of the genus is insufficient for more than a specific division.
