Show Kolb- D 793 Q Did you make an examination of those rapids before you ran them? A It is customary, if you are careful at all. to get out above every bad rapid, tie the boat up, walk down almost to the bottom of it, look upstream very carefully; in that muddy water, looking upstream, one can locate the hidden rocks by the action of the water; looking downstream it is very difficult to tell whether it is a rock or whether it is just a wave caused by a deep rock. We would try to remember where those rocks were, and sometimes we would go back two or three times before we could satisfy ourselves that we would remember the channel. Q So I will have it straight in the record, you and your brother actually examined these rapids in Cataract canyon before you ran them? A yes, we did that, I think, in every bad rapid, and we would make about ten miles a day through those rapids for that reason, that we were spending most of the time on the shore, examining the rapids. We were there to get pictures putting our boats through violent water; that is what we wanted, some motion pictures. The game was in it's infancy then, but we had a camera, and we were making motion pictures of shooting rapids for the thrill they would give. Q This was kind of a sporting event with you? 2761 |
