Show Kolb- D 780 A It is in Colorado. Q As I understand it, you swing through Utah through the canyon of Lodore? A No sir. The canyon of Lodore is in Colorado, and it makes a loop, and comes back again into Utah, and after going through Whirlpool canyon and Split Mountain canyon -- I am not sure whether Split Mountain is in Utah or Colorado, it is very close. Q Did you have any trouble going through Split Mountain canyon? A It rained a lot when we were in Lodore; we had a six- foot rise of the river; the river conditions changed from that time on coming down; the Yampa river came in; that added considerable more water, as well, and river conditions were quite different from that time on. We were riding on the crest of this flood; we got through without any mishap, but we considered ourselves lucky. That is true of all rapid running. Q Through that section was it necessary to line the boats at any place? A Not in Split Mountain, and not in Whirlpool. Q Let's proceed on down from Split Mountain. A There is a valley commencing directly below Split Mountain, a valley which reaches past Jensen, the name has slipped my mind; that is comparatively quite water; the descent in the river is much less than it is in these other canyons up above; the river widened out; there are cattle ranches on either side; 2748 |
