Show Lumsden- D 670 but we was working as fast as we could; we wanted to make this trip, of course, successfully, and we wanted to do it in as short a time as we could. Q When you got to the mouth of the Green river, what did you do there? A We proceeded to go up what they called the Grand river at that time, it is now the Colorado river,-- I guess you all understand that: we proceeded to go up the Grand river to Moab, and we felt pretty good about it until we had gone some -- oh maybe three or four miles, I don't know just exactly what distance it is, before we encountered a big slide in the Grand river that our boat wasn't capable of making at all, but we was foolish enough to go into this slide where the water was pouring over, and the first thing we knew, our boat was headed down the river, just turned us right around; we got into a big swirlpool where there was a great many trees and different size timbers in this swirlpool, we got into that, it turned us around -- I know it turned us around once, and I am not sure but more: anyhow, we finally got out of this swirlpool and went into the bank, into the rocks with the bow of the boat; that was on the bank of the river. Q Did that do any damage to your boat? A No, it didn't, -- nothing we could see, anyhow. Q Had you reinforced your boat in some way? A Yes sir, we had it reinforced with big irons on the nose of the boat; we was prepared for a part of it. 2638 |
