A My father went in there with six wagons and a band of probably one hundred head of loose horses. We went through the southern part of Utah, through Escalante - over the Escalante desert to what is known as the Hole- in- the- Rock crossing of the Colorado; that is a few miles above where the San Juan comes into it. There we entered San Juan county. Q Then you crossed at Hole- in- the- Rock. Where did your party proceed from there? A We went up where they were starting Bluff City, and fifteen miles above to another Mormon settlement at the mouth of Recapture - at Montezuma; that is about fifteen miles above Bluff, fifteen or seventeen. Q Did you establish a residence there? A Yes sir, we built a fort there; there were ten or eleven families, some in there, some came right directly after we got there; built a fort, what we call a fort, log cabins in a square and established and went to farming and settled down. My father built a store and went to trading with the Indians. SPECIAL MASTER: Mr. Blackmar, we will suspend for about ten minutes. The Chief Justice of Colorado asked to see 2561 |
