Show Kolb- D 766 at the canyon. We knew of two parties who want through the river after we lived there. I wasn't at the canyon at the time of the Russell R. Monette trip and Mr. Bert Loper had started with the party but didn't come through to that point. They went through, I believe, in 1907. I was absent from the canyon, but I had reports of the fact they had gone through. Two years later Mr. Julius F. Stone of Columbus, Ohio, associated with Nathan Galloway, a trapper and hunter who had been through the canyon, came down with a party of four persons, perhaps five. I had had some correspondence with Mr. Stone before be came through, as to the possibility of going through as a photographer; I had not met him at that time; It was through a friend I corresponded. Mr. Stone came up to the Bright Angel trail, not him there at the hotel that evening and called with other members of the party. I had read the books published by F. S. Dellenbaugh, who accompanied Major Powell on his second trip. Is Mr. Dellenbaugh recognized as the great historian of the Colorado river? Yes sir, he is. What date did you leave Green River, Wyoming? I said September 18th; I think it was September 8th, to be 2734 |
