Show Hyde- D 622 Q Are there rapids further on down the river? A Yes, there is rapids at intervals on down the river. There is a rapid at the mouth of John's canyon. Looking from the upper rim down at it, it looks like there is rapids in various places down. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q You have never been down the stream through these rapids yourself, have you? A Through what you term the rapids? Q What you term the rapids. A What I term the rapids, the only rapid I have crossed was horseback; that is the mouth of Gypsum creek, at the Hat; that is one of our regular fords there. That country lays in rolls, lime creek basin, they call it -- Mexican Hat basin; it slopes in from every direction, from the south down Gypsum creek, down Lime creek from the north, and heavy anticlines in from the east and west, makes it a complete basins; then the river has out this formation in two the middle. The bottom of this basin is on a level with the river. The is no canyon there. That is at the mouth of Gypsum creek. Q You say the ford there runs through a rapid? A There is a rapid; we always use the rapid as a ford. Q As a ford for a boat? A Oh, no, just for horses. 2590 |
