Show Hyde- D 631 witness having been there so long,-- Q. Have you been across the river into the Navajo reservation? A. Yes, I have, quite a lot. Q. With reference to the question I just asked you, as to irrigation, is that land in the Navajo reservation on susceptible to irrigation? A. There is a very great deal of it that is; Chinle wash -- from the upper Chinle -- Chinle runs in a horseshoe shape -- from the upper Chinle wash up to Shiprock, that is the country I am speaking of, sloping sand flats. CROSS EXAMINATION BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q. Give us the area of that country that you just spoke of that is susceptible of irrigation, in miles, if you can. A. On the south side of the river from Chinle creek up. Q. How wide is it, how long is it within the state of Utah? A. Within the state of Utah? The Arizona line, direct south from Bluff, would hit Chinle wash, run a line direct south from Bluff eighteen miles to the Arizona state line; from there up practically to the four corners; we would call it twenty miles wide by forty long; that is making a guess at it; that many miles that would make good, level farms; some bad lands. Q. Extending on east into Mexico? 2599 |
