Show Lumnsden- C 684 FURTHER EXAMINATION BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Was the reason you could not get up this slide in the Colorado river because you didn't have sufficient power to your engines? A That is really what happened, judge; our power wouldn't steam this cataract. A few places we couldn't make it at all; I don't know of any other boat that could have made it. MR. FARNSWORTH: We move to strike that. THE SPECIAL MASTER: Strike that last out. Q If you had had power, from your observation, do you think you could have got through there? A I don't think so, no sir. Q What previous survey had been made of the Colorado river before you took this trip? Had you seen skiffs down there? A I made an examination down quite a piece, myself. Q Had you got down as far as this slide you speak of? A No sir. Q What reason had you, then, to suppose that you could have got up to Colorado? A That reminds me now, and calls to memory -- I believe -- I am not going to make this positive, but I believe now that C. W. Anderson and the parties that mad the trip down the Green river, I believe they did go; I don't know whether they went all the way to Moab, but I believe they went up the Grand river quite a piece. 2652 |
